Structure reveals things

The past months have been quieter than the previous two years.

Part of that is market conditions. Part of it is that we had grown quickly, and the internal structure hadn't kept up.

So we used the time to rebuild systems.

One thing I'm reminded of every time we do this:

Structure reveals things.

When you start defining how work should actually happen, clearly and consistently, you discover very quickly which parts of the business are solid and which ones were running on habit or goodwill.

Standards become visible.

And once standards become visible, things start to shift. Some work improves quickly. Some processes need to be rebuilt. Some relationships quietly stop making sense.

None of this is dramatic. It's just what building a real company looks like from the inside.

A long time ago someone told me the story of a farmer whose horse ran away. The neighbors said it was terrible luck. The farmer replied: "Good luck, bad luck. We'll see."

Most of what happens during periods like this only reveals its meaning later.

You do the work and wait to see what it was.
